C&O Canal & Trail

BicyclingWhether you yearn for outdoor adventure or you claim to be an amateur historian, the 184-mile linear park that parallels the Potomac River is ideal for you.

The closest access point to the Frederick Inn Bed and Breakfast is Nolands Ferry, located just 6 miles away.  Besides parking and access to the trail, at this location you will find a boat ramp, picnic tables, and the all-important restroom facilities.

If you are so inclined, you can follow the trail on bike or on foot.  You can head upstream toward Harpers Ferry, or you can head downstream toward the Monocacy Aqueduct.  Along the way, you will be able to explore old canal locks, restored structures, nature sanctuaries, etc.  You may even sleep overnight in a locktender’s house.DSCN4428

If you should choose to ride or drive all the way down to the Great Falls Tavern Visitors Center, you can actually ride on an authentic mule-pulled canal boat.

Note:  The tow path is fairly wide and smooth and well maintained by the National Park Service.  But if you choose to bring your bike you will probably not want to ride on tires that are too skinny.
