We all know what comes after those April showers. And Frederick County, Maryland is no exception. There are plenty of places to indulge in the beautiful May flowers.
One of our favorite spots is the Surreybrooke Garden Center. It is a cross between a retail establishment and a botanical oasis (actually more of the latter). You can explore the extensive gardens and historical outbuildings. The winding pathways lead to colorful borders overflowing with perennials, flowering native shrubs, and vines that climb the decorative features, such as statues and pergolas. There is no charge.
We acquire most of our plants and herbs from Thanksgiving Farms. Every trip to this rainbow-painted complex of greenhouses and buildings is an adventure, resulting in the purchase of more flowers than we physically have room for. And I am always tempted to buy some of the many baubles and shiny ornaments, but Pat usually takes me by the arm and leads me toward the car.
These products make their way into the local private gardens that are on display for the Beyond the Garden Gates Tour in downtown Frederick City. This year the tour will be conducted May 20 and 21, 2017.
Of course, after a pleasurable day of smelling the roses, you should come to relax at the Frederick Inn Bed and Breakfast.
